Dress for Success: D is for Dust

Standing in his bedroom, half-naked in a pair of trousers, my client told me a bold face lie.  He said “I wear these all the time”  and I wanted to say “liar, liar, pants on fire!” because I could see those trousers were all covered in dust! liar liar 204x300 Dress for Success: D is for Dust

This isn’t the first time that I’ve been lied to in the bedroom (closet) by a semi-clothed man! But, if you’re gonna lie to me, at least knock the dust off your trousers before you tell me that you wear them all the time. I’m hip to your ways.

I know you guys have a hard time letting clothes go, especially things that are comfortable and familiar. But that doesn’t mean you should be wearing them. So, for the record, here’s what you can get rid of immediately.

1)    Anything covered in dust.  You’re not gonna wear it and it’ll make you sick.
2)    Anything you haven’t worn in 2 years. Times up.
3)    Anything torn, ripped, dated, or ill colored has no value. Fix it or toss it!
4)    Anything that triggers the question “Are you okay today?” gets tossed.
5)    Anything that “use to” fit!

Sound b!tchy?   Maybe so, just remember this . . .

Old clothes will make you look old.

Is that really what you want? There’s never a good excuse to wear old clothes. If there something you know you should be wearing, toss it or donate it.

How the story ended: Since his favorite trousers were too old and worn out, I promised that if he let me take them with me, I’d make him  a new pair of custom trousers. Then just for kicks, I made him strip down and put his trousers in my purse and dared him to try to take them back!

FYI – If you’re in Chicago, donate gently worn clothes to Bridge 2 Success or Pacific Garden Mission.
